Lauren James scores again as Chelsea beat Manchester City to win Women's League Cup
Kerr and Cuthbert also on target as Blues retain trophy
Lauren James was once again the matchwinner for Chelsea as the Blues beat Manchester City 3-2 to win the Women's League Cup on Sunday.
The England international scored the only goal of the game in the first half, before Sam Kerr and Erin Cuthbert added further goals after the break. City pulled two goals back through Lauren Hemp and Hayley Raso, but it was not enough to prevent Chelsea from retaining the trophy.
The win was Chelsea's fourth Women's League Cup triumph in a row, and their eighth overall. It was also a record-breaking day for James, who became the first player to score in three consecutive finals in the competition.
Chelsea manager Emma Hayes praised her team's performance after the game, saying: “I thought we were excellent today. We controlled the game from start to finish and created some really good chances. We were clinical in front of goal and defended really well. I'm so proud of the players.”
Manchester City manager Gareth Taylor was disappointed with his team's performance, but admitted that Chelsea were the better team on the day. He said: “We didn't play as well as we can today. We made too many mistakes and Chelsea punished us. They were the better team and deserved to win.”
