Hercules and the Amazon's Belt

The Ninth Labor

Hippolyte and the Amazons

For the ninth labor, Eurystheus ordered Hercules to bring him the belt of Hippolyte. This was no ordinary belt and no ordinary warrior. In Greek mythology, Hippolyta or Hippolyte was a daughter of Ares and Otrera, queen of the Amazons, and a sister of Antiope. Hippolyta, daughter of Ares and Otrera, was a queen of the Amazons. She was best known for her girdle, which was said to signify her supremacy among the Amazons.

After Hippolyte was killed in the ensuing contest, Hercules removed her girdle and carried it off with him. In the drawing, Hercules is shown having slain two of the Amazons while two others mounted.
