Animated GIFs with Adobe Photoshop

Opening Animated GIFs in Photoshop

Inspired by the Noise Professors' decision to create animated GIFs in Photoshop, we've created this guide to help you get started. To open an animated GIF in Photoshop CS3 or CS4, follow these steps:

Step 1: Import the Animated GIF

Open Photoshop and choose “File” > “Import” > “Video Frames to Layers…” from the menu bar.

Step 2: Select Import Options

In the “Import Video Frames to Layers” dialog box, select the animated GIF file you want to open. You can choose to import “All Frames” or a specific “Frame Range”.

Step 3: Layer Timeline

Once the GIF is imported, you'll see a new “Layer Timeline” palette appear at the bottom of the Photoshop workspace. This timeline displays the individual frames of the GIF.

Editing Animated GIFs

After opening the GIF in Photoshop, you can edit the individual frames using the standard Photoshop tools. You can adjust colors, crop images, add text, and more. To edit a specific frame, select it from the timeline and make your changes.
