Who Names the Seven Dwarfs?

Not the Brothers Grimm

The names of the Seven Dwarfs that we've come to know and love weren't the original choices. Believe it or not, there were names like Jumpy, Deafy, and Nifty. The names we know today were actually created by Walt Disney for his 1937 animated film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

From the Brothers Grimm to Disney

In the original story by the Brothers Grimm, the dwarfs were not given individual names. They were simply referred to as “the seven dwarfs.” It was Walt Disney who decided to give them names and personalities for his film.

Disney's animators studied the original story and came up with a list of potential names for the dwarfs. They wanted names that would be memorable and reflect the dwarfs' personalities. After much deliberation, they settled on the names we know today: Doc, Grumpy, Happy, Sleepy, Bashful, Sneezy, and Dopey.

The names of the Seven Dwarfs have become iconic in popular culture. They are instantly recognizable and have been used in countless stories, films, and other works of art.
