Lyric Opera of Chicago Hires John Mangum as New General Director

Seasoned Arts Administrator to Lead Prestigious Opera Company

The Lyric Opera of Chicago, one of the world's leading opera companies, has announced the appointment of John Mangum as its new General Director. Mangum, 49, currently serves as the President and CEO of the Houston Symphony Orchestra and will succeed Anthony Freud, who has led the Lyric Opera for 13 seasons.

Mangum brings a wealth of experience in arts management and artistic programming to his new role. He has been instrumental in guiding the Houston Symphony through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, maintaining the orchestra's artistic excellence and financial stability.

As General Director of the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Mangum will oversee all aspects of the company's operations, including artistic planning, fundraising, and audience engagement. He will work closely with the company's Music Director, Enrique Mazzola, to shape the future of the Lyric Opera.
