Pull produce from fridge & avoid eating, warn health officials

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued an urgent warning about contaminated cucumbers linked to a salmonella outbreak that has affected 449 individuals across 31 states and the District of Columbia.

Preliminary investigations by the CDC indicate that the outbreak is connected to cucumbers distributed by Anda Fresh Produce, a California-based company. The recall applies to cucumbers packaged under the “Limited Edition” label with PLU codes “3035” or “3531,” and sold between August 1 and August 16, 2023.

Consumers are strongly advised to check their refrigerators and dispose of any cucumbers that match the above description. Thoroughly clean and disinfect any surfaces or containers that may have come into contact with the contaminated produce.

Symptoms and Prevention

Symptoms of salmonella infection may include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Fever

The incubation period for salmonella can range from 12 to 72 hours, and most individuals recover within a few days.

To prevent salmonella infections:

  • Wash hands thoroughly before and after handling food.
  • Clean and sanitize surfaces and utensils used for food preparation.
  • Cook poultry, eggs, and meat thoroughly to the recommended internal temperatures.
  • Avoid consuming raw or undercooked animal products.
  • Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly before eating.
  • Store perishable foods in the refrigerator at 40°F or below.

Ongoing Investigation and Response

The CDC is collaborating with state and local health departments to investigate the outbreak and identify the source of contamination. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is also conducting inspections at Anda Fresh Produce facilities to determine the cause of the outbreak and ensure that proper food safety measures are in place.

Consumers who have experienced symptoms of salmonella after consuming cucumbers are encouraged to contact their healthcare providers and report their illness to the CDC.
