Tesla Analyst Tests FSD for a Third Time, Shares Results in Investor Notes

Multiple Failures Noted, Driver Intervention Required

A Tesla Inc. analyst has put CEO Elon Musk's call for investors to test Full Self-Driving (FSD) to the test with unsatisfying results. Truist analyst William Stein conducted a third round of testing on FSD V12511 in a new Tesla Model 3, using a similar setup to his first two tests. However, this time, the results were less than impressive.

Test Details and Failures

Stein's test involved driving a 2023 Tesla Model 3 Performance with FSD V12511 engaged on a 256-mile loop in San Francisco. During the test, the FSD system exhibited multiple failures that required driver intervention, including:

  • Failure to detect and stop for a stopped school bus
  • Cutting off a semi-truck while changing lanes
  • Driving over a double yellow line into oncoming traffic
  • Erratic lane positioning
  • Ignoring a stop sign and rolling through an intersection

In addition to these critical errors, Stein also noted several instances of jerky steering and braking, as well as difficulty navigating intersections.

Analyst's Conclusion and Musk's Response

In his investor note, Stein expressed concerns about the safety of FSD and questioned whether it is ready for widespread public use. He stated, “While we appreciate Tesla's efforts to improve FSD, our latest test results indicate that the system still has significant limitations and cannot be considered a replacement for a human driver.” Elon Musk has yet to comment on Stein's latest test results.
