What is the UEFA Champions League?

The UEFA Champions League (UCL) is an annual club association football competition organized by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) and contested by top-division European clubs.

Format

The competition consists of a group stage followed by a knockout phase. In the group stage, 32 teams are drawn into eight groups of four teams each. Each team plays the other teams in their group twice, home and away. The top two teams in each group advance to the knockout phase.

The knockout phase consists of two-legged ties, with the away goals rule in effect. The eight teams that advance from the group stage are seeded into a draw, with the top four teams seeded as the “seeded teams” and the bottom four teams seeded as the “unseeded teams.” The seeded teams will play the second leg at home.
