Lou Piniella Returns to the Spotlight

Yankees Stadium Reunion

Former Mariners manager Lou Piniella was back in the spotlight at Yankee Stadium on Thursday. The Mariners brought back a familiar name to rekindle their 1990s-era glory. Dan Wilson, who has been working as a special assistant to the general manager, will take over as manager for the rest of the season.

Rekindling the Glory Days

The Mariners were 55 games behind the Houston Astros going into Friday. If the team does go out there and take it, it'll have to do so without Wilson, who has been battling health issues.

Wilson's Health Issues

Wilson has been battling a rare form of cancer since 2014. He has undergone multiple rounds of chemotherapy and radiation treatment. In 2017, he had a stem cell transplant. Despite his health issues, Wilson has remained positive and upbeat.

Piniella was the manager of the Mariners from 1993 to 2002. He led the team to its only playoff appearance in 1995. Piniella was inducted into the Mariners Hall of Fame in 2010.

A Familiar Name

Wilson is a familiar name to Mariners fans. He was a catcher for the team from 1993 to 2004. Wilson was a two-time All-Star and a Gold Glove winner. He is currently the Mariners' all-time leader in games caught.
