Traffic workers killed in Highway 6 crash

Three killed Thursday

Three Colorado Department of Transportation workers have died following a crash on Highway 6 Thursday, according to Colorado State Patrol.

The crash happened at mile marker 213. A semi-truck traveling eastbound attempted to avoid slowing traffic, lost control, and crossed the concrete median before colliding with the workers.

CDOT regularly patrols state highways to help with traffic flow, assist stranded motorists, and perform necessary maintenance.

All eastbound lanes and one westbound lane remained closed for hours after the crash, backing up traffic for at least 10 miles.

CSP continues to investigate. The names of the victims have not been released.

CDOT workers are often at risk while working on or near busy roadways. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2020, there were 125 fatal crashes involving highway maintenance workers.
