FIU Football Coaching Staff 2013: A Season of Change

A New Era Begins

After a disappointing 3-9 season in 2012, FIU football head coach Mario Cristobal was fired. The school quickly hired former Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin to replace him. Kiffin brought with him a new staff, including offensive coordinator David Reaves, defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt, and special teams coordinator Todd Lyght.

A New Offense

Kiffin's offense is known for its high-tempo, spread attack. The Panthers averaged 34.7 points per game in 2013, up from 23.9 points per game in 2012. Quarterback Jake Medlock had a breakout season, throwing for 3,035 yards and 21 touchdowns. Running back Devon Johnson also had a strong season, rushing for 1,067 yards and 10 touchdowns.

A New Defense

Pruitt's defense was also much improved in 2013. The Panthers allowed just 24.2 points per game, down from 32.1 points per game in 2012. Defensive end Isame Faciane led the team with 10 sacks, and linebacker Anthony Wint added 9.5 sacks.

A New Special Teams Unit

Lyght's special teams unit was also solid in 2013. Kicker Jack Griffin made 16 of 20 field goals, and punter Tommy Heatherly averaged 44.5 yards per punt. The Panthers also blocked two punts and returned one for a touchdown.

A New Season

The 2013 season was a success for FIU football. The Panthers finished with a 6-6 record, their best record since 2011. They also won their first bowl game since 2010, defeating Western Kentucky in the Bahamas Bowl. The future looks bright for FIU football. With Kiffin at the helm, the Panthers have the potential to be a contender in Conference USA.
