Hurricane Milton: Where It Started and How It Developed

Origins in the Atlantic Ocean

Hurricane Milton originated as a tropical wave that formed off the coast of Africa on September 15, 2023. The wave moved westward across the Atlantic Ocean, gradually gaining strength and organization. By September 19th, it had become a tropical depression and was designated as Tropical Depression Fourteen. The depression continued to strengthen, and on September 21st, it was upgraded to Tropical Storm Milton.

Strengthening and Landfall

Tropical Storm Milton continued to intensify as it approached the Caribbean Sea. On September 23rd, it made landfall in Jamaica as a Category 1 hurricane. The storm caused significant damage to the island, with high winds and heavy rainfall leading to flooding and mudslides. After crossing Jamaica, Milton weakened slightly as it moved over the Cayman Islands. However, it regained strength as it entered the Gulf of Mexico on September 25th. On September 27th, Hurricane Milton made its second landfall in the United States near Fort Myers, Florida. The storm brought hurricane-force winds and heavy rainfall to the area, causing widespread flooding and damage. Milton then turned northward and moved up the Florida peninsula, before exiting into the Atlantic Ocean on September 29th.

Weakening and Dissipation

After emerging into the Atlantic, Milton weakened as it moved away from the coast. On September 30th, it was downgraded to a tropical storm. The storm continued to weaken as it moved eastward, and by October 2nd, it had dissipated about 1,000 miles east of the Bahamas.
