Minor earthquake tremors strike central Swedish town

On Tuesday, August 16, 2023, at 03:29 CEST, a minor earthquake with a magnitude of 3.0 struck the town of Ludvika in central Sweden.

The earthquake was felt by residents of Ludvika and the surrounding area. No injuries or damage have been reported.

According to the Swedish National Seismological Center, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers.

Earthquakes are relatively rare in Sweden. The last earthquake of similar magnitude to hit the country was in 2019, when a 3.1 magnitude earthquake struck the town of SkellefteƄ in northern Sweden.

Experts are still investigating the cause of the earthquake, but they believe it may have been caused by the movement of tectonic plates in the region.

What to do during an earthquake

If you are in an earthquake, the most important thing to do is to stay calm and protect yourself from falling objects.

Here are some helpful tips for staying safe during an earthquake:

  • Drop to the ground, take cover under a sturdy table or desk, and hold on until the shaking stops.
  • Stay away from windows, outside doors and walls, and anything that could fall, such as lighting fixtures or furniture.
  • If you are in a car, pull over to the side of the road and stop. Stay in the car and wait for the shaking to stop.
  • If you are outdoors, find a clear spot away from buildings, trees, and power lines.
  • Be sure to check yourself and others for injuries after the earthquake has stopped.
  • If you see any downed power lines or damaged buildings, be sure to report them to the authorities.
