Northern Lights Could Illuminate Moscow Skies Wednesday, Astronomer Says

The Northern Lights, a celestial phenomenon more commonly associated with high-latitude regions like Alaska and Norway, could be visible in the skies above Moscow on Wednesday night, according to an astronomer at the Moscow Planetarium.

“If the weather is clear and there is no light pollution, it is possible that Muscovites will be able to see the aurora borealis,” said astronomer Lyudmila Koshlyakova. “The best time to look will be between 10 pm and midnight.” The Northern Lights are caused by the interaction of charged particles from the sun with the Earth's magnetic field. These particles are drawn to the magnetic poles, where they collide with atoms and molecules in the atmosphere, causing them to emit light. The Northern Lights are typically visible in a band around the Arctic Circle, but they can sometimes be seen as far south as Moscow. This is because the Earth's magnetic field is not static, but rather constantly shifts and changes. When the magnetic field is particularly strong, the Northern Lights can be seen at lower latitudes. According to Koshlyakova, the chances of seeing the Northern Lights in Moscow are relatively slim, but not impossible. “It is a rare event, but it does happen,” she said. “So if you are lucky, you might just catch a glimpse of the aurora borealis over Moscow.”
