LIVE UPDATES: Tornado risk continues after twister hits OKC metro
Tornado Warning for Oklahoma, Texas and Kansas
A tornado warning has been issued for parts of Oklahoma, Texas and Kansas. The National Weather Service (NWS) says that a tornado was spotted near Oklahoma City at 9:30 p.m. CDT. The tornado is moving northeast at 30 mph. The NWS is urging residents in the path of the tornado to take shelter immediately.
The NWS has also issued a tornado watch for parts of Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, and Missouri. A tornado watch means that conditions are favorable for tornadoes to develop. Residents in the tornado watch area should be prepared to take shelter if a tornado warning is issued.
Tornado Safety Tips
If you are in the path of a tornado, the NWS recommends that you take the following steps:
- Take shelter in a sturdy building.
- Go to the lowest floor of the building and stay away from windows.
- If you are outside, lie down in a ditch or other low-lying area and cover your head with your hands.
Tornado Damage
The tornado that hit Oklahoma City caused significant damage. The NWS says that the tornado was at least an EF-2 tornado, with winds of up to 111 mph. The tornado damaged homes, businesses, and power lines. There are no reports of injuries or deaths at this time.
Tornado Outlook
The NWS says that the tornado risk will continue throughout the night. Residents in the affected areas should be prepared to take shelter if a tornado warning is issued.
