A monument to Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich and his wife Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna was unveiled on October 4, 2021 in Moscow. The sculpture was installed in the square in front of the Church of the Holy Trinity in Nikitniki, where the couple lived for many years. The monument was created by sculptor Alexander Rukavishnikov.
The opening ceremony was attended by Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, Chairman of the Russian Historical Society Sergey Naryshkin, head of the Synodal Department for the Relationship of the Church with Society and the Media Vladimir Legoida, and other officials and guests.
In memory of the holy martyrs
In his speech, Sergei Sobyanin stressed that the monument is a symbol of historical memory and continuity. “Today we remember the tragic fate of the holy martyrs who gave their lives for the faith,” the mayor said. “Their death became a symbol of the end of the old world and the beginning of a new one.”
Sergei Naryshkin noted that the monument to Grand Duke Sergei and Princess Elizabeth is a reminder of the events that shook Russia at the beginning of the 20th century. “This monument will remind us of the need to preserve the historical memory and the lessons learned from the past,” Naryshkin said.
Vladimir Legoida said that the monument is a symbol of the unity of the Church and the Russian people. “The martyrs Grand Duke Sergei and Princess Elizabeth are examples of true love and service to the Fatherland,” Legoida said. “Their memory will always be with us.”
The monument to Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich and his wife Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna is a tribute to the memory of the saints and a reminder of the tragic events of the Russian history.
