Power play pushes Caps to 3-2 win over Canadiens
After two periods of back-and-forth hockey at the Bell Centre, the Capitals finally found their footing in the third period and pulled away from the Canadiens for a 3-2 win. Garnet Hathaway scored the go-ahead goal just past the midway point of the third period, and Anthony Mantha added an empty-netter in the final minute to seal the win.
The Canadiens came out strong in the first period and took an early lead on a goal by Joel Armia. However, the Capitals responded with a goal by Alex Ovechkin later in the period to tie the game. The second period was scoreless, but the Capitals dominated the third period, outshooting the Canadiens 13-5.
The Capitals' power play was clicking on all cylinders, going 1-for-3. Ovechkin's goal came on the power play, and Hathaway's game-winner was also scored with the man advantage. The Canadiens' power play was not as successful, going 0-for-3.
Ovechkin continues to climb scoring charts
Alex Ovechkin's goal in the first period was his 810th career goal, moving him past Jaromir Jagr for third place on the NHL's all-time scoring list.
Ovechkin is now just 10 goals behind Gordie Howe for second place on the all-time list, and he is on pace to pass Howe later this season. Ovechkin is also just 164 goals behind Wayne Gretzky for the all-time scoring record.
Capitals improve to 7-2-1 on the road
With the win, the Capitals improved to 7-2-1 on the road this season. The Capitals have been one of the best teams in the NHL on the road in recent seasons, and they are off to a strong start on the road this season.
The Capitals will be back in action on Thursday night when they host the Florida Panthers. The Panthers are one of the top teams in the NHL, so the Capitals will need to be at their best to get a win.
