Panthers Offensive Depth Chart Breakdown
Quarterbacks
Sam Darnold is the clear-cut starter for the Panthers. He enters his third season in Carolina. Darnold is efficient when kept clean. However, he can struggle under pressure. Baker Mayfield is Darnold’s backup. Mayfield struggled in Carolina last year. He’s unlikely to start more than a few games in 2023.
Running Backs
Christian McCaffrey will miss the beginning of the season with a hamstring injury. He is expected back by Week 5. D’Onta Foreman will start in McCaffrey’s absence. Foreman is a solid runner between the tackles. However, he doesn’t offer much in the passing game. Chuba Hubbard and Raheem Blackshear will also see some carries.
Wide Receivers
DJ Moore is the Panthers’ top wide receiver. He led the team in targets last year. Moore is a speedy deep threat who can also make plays over the middle. Robbie Anderson is a vertical threat who can take the top off the defense. Terrace Marshall Jr. is a former first-round pick with upside. He has yet to live up to his potential. Shi Smith is the Panthers’ slot receiver. He is a reliable target with good hands.
Tight Ends
Ian Thomas is the Panthers’ starting tight end. Thomas is a good blocker and a decent receiver. Tommy Tremble is the team’s second tight end. He is a good blocker as well. He caught just six passes a year ago.
Offensive Line
The Panthers’ offensive line is not a strength. Ikem Ekwonu is considered the team’s left tackle of the future. However, he struggled at times in his rookie season. Bradley Bozeman is the Panthers’ starting center. He is a veteran who can help lead the line. Pat Elflein is the starting right guard. Elflein is a solid run blocker. Taylor Moton is the starting right tackle. He is the Panthers’ best offensive lineman. Brady Christensen is the starting left guard. He is a young player with some potential.
