The Constitution of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka states that “the sovereignty of the people shall be exercised and enjoyed in the following manner:”
- through a freely elected body of representatives of the people;
- by periodical referendums;
- and in such other democratic manner as may be determined by Parliament.
The right to vote is one of the most important ways that citizens exercise their sovereignty. Voting is a way to have a say in who represents you in government and what policies are enacted.
Registering to vote is the first step to exercising your right to vote. In order to register to vote, you must be a citizen of Sri Lanka and be at least 18 years old.
There are two methods of registration:
- Automatic Registration: If you are a citizen of Sri Lanka and have been issued a National Identity Card (NIC), you will be automatically registered to vote.
- Manual Registration: If you are not automatically registered, you may register manually by completing a registration form and submitting it to the nearest Divisional Secretariat.
Once you are registered to vote, you will be issued a voter ID card. You must bring your voter ID card with you when you go to vote.
