Early Life and Playing Career

Sam Mitchell was born on September 2, 1963, in Washington, D.C. He attended Mercer University in Macon, Georgia, where he played college basketball for the Mercer Bears. Mitchell was a standout player for the Bears, leading the team to the NCAA Division I Tournament in his senior year.

After graduating from Mercer, Mitchell was drafted by the Indiana Pacers in the second round of the 1985 NBA Draft. He played for the Pacers for two seasons before being traded to the Milwaukee Bucks. Mitchell spent seven seasons with the Bucks, becoming a key player and fan favorite.

Mitchell was known as a versatile player, with the ability to play both forward and guard positions. He was also a strong defender and rebounder. Mitchell was named to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team in 1995.

Coaching Career

After retiring from playing in 2002, Mitchell began his coaching career as an assistant coach with the Toronto Raptors. He was promoted to head coach in 2004, becoming the first African American head coach in Raptors history.
