Newcastle boss offers update on key players ahead of Arsenal clash
Eddie Howe held a press conference on Friday afternoon to discuss team news ahead of the Magpies' trip to the Emirates Stadium on Sunday
Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe has revealed that Allan Saint-Maximin and Joe Willock missed training on Thursday due to illness, but he is hopeful that both players will be available for the game against Arsenal on Sunday.
Howe also said that Emil Krafth and Chris Wood are both fit and available for selection, but Martin Dubravka, Javier Manquillo, and Jamal Lewis all remain out injured.
On Allan Saint-Maximin and Joe Willock
“Allan and Joe missed training yesterday due to illness,” Howe said. “We're monitoring them closely, and we'll make a decision on their availability closer to the game.”
Saint-Maximin has been one of Newcastle's most important players this season, and his absence would be a major blow. The French winger has scored five goals and provided three assists in 16 Premier League appearances.
Willock has also been in good form this season, scoring three goals in 14 Premier League appearances. The midfielder has been playing in a more advanced role under Howe, and he has been a key part of the Magpies' attack.
On Emil Krafth and Chris Wood
“Emil and Chris are both fit and available for selection,” Howe said. “They've both been training well, and they're both eager to play.”
Krafth has been out of action since January with a hamstring injury, but he has now returned to full fitness. The Swedish defender is a valuable asset to the Newcastle squad, and he provides cover at both right-back and center-back.
Wood has also been out injured recently, but he is now back in contention for a place in the starting lineup. The New Zealand striker has scored two goals in 16 Premier League appearances this season.
On Martin Dubravka, Javier Manquillo, and Jamal Lewis
“Martin, Javier, and Jamal are all still out injured,” Howe said. “Martin is making progress, but he's not yet ready to return to action. Javier is also making progress, but he's still a few weeks away from a return.
“>Jamal is still recovering from a long-term injury. We're not sure when he will be back in action.”
Dubravka has been out of action since December with a foot injury, while Manquillo has been out since January with a muscle injury. Lewis has been out since August with a knee injury.
