Newcastle climb out of relegation zone with crucial win over Arsenal

Gunners' winless run extended to five

Newcastle United climbed out of the relegation zone with a crucial 2-0 win over Arsenal at St James' Park on Monday night.

The Magpies took the lead in the first half through Jonjo Shelvey's stunning strike from outside the area.

And they doubled their advantage in the second half when Joelinton headed home from a corner.

The win moved Newcastle up to 14th in the table, four points clear of the relegation zone.

Arsenal, meanwhile, remain in ninth place, five points behind fourth-placed Manchester United.

A much-needed win for Newcastle

Newcastle's victory was their first in five games and it was a much-needed one.

The Magpies had been in poor form of late, losing their last four games in all competitions.

But they produced a spirited performance against Arsenal and deserved the three points.

Arsenal's winless run continues

Arsenal's winless run now stretches to five games in all competitions.

The Gunners have not won since they beat Watford 3-2 on December 16.

Their poor run of form has seen them drop out of the top four and they are now nine points behind leaders Manchester City.
