Matt Painter Clarifies Redshirt Status for Guards Ahead of Season
Purdue Basketball: Painter Says Jaden Ivey Will Redshirt, Ethan Morton Remains In Flux
With over a month to go before Purdue basketball's season opener, Matt Painter is starting to get a better idea of his roster.
On Tuesday, the Boilermakers' head coach announced that true freshman guard Jaden Ivey will redshirt this season. The 6-foot-4 Ivey was a four-star recruit and is considered one of the top shooting guards in the country. However, Painter said Ivey needs more time to develop physically and mentally.
The redshirt decision for Ivey is not a surprise. He is one of four true freshmen on Purdue's roster, and it is not uncommon for freshmen to redshirt in order to get stronger and adjust to the college game. Ivey should be a key contributor for the Boilermakers next season and beyond.
Another true freshman guard, Ethan Morton, has not yet been cleared to practice due to an injury, but Painter said he should be ready to go for the season opener against North Florida on Nov. 10.
Morton is a 6-foot-3 combo guard who was a three-star recruit. He is a good shooter and passer and could be a valuable asset to the Boilermakers' backcourt.
With Ivey redshirting, Morton will have a chance to earn significant playing time this season. He will likely be the backup point guard behind Eric Hunter Jr. and could also see time at shooting guard.
The Boilermakers have a lot of depth in their backcourt, but Morton could be a key player for them this season. He is a talented player who could make a significant impact.
