Hernia Surgery Options and Techniques
Types of Hernia Repair
There are two main types of hernia surgeries: open hernia repair and minimally invasive hernia repair.
Open Hernia Repair
In open hernia repair, a surgeon makes a single incision cut that allows them to push the protruding tissue back into place and secure it with stitches or a mesh patch. This method is typically used for larger or more complex hernias.
Minimally Invasive Hernia Repair
Minimally invasive hernia repair involves making several small incisions and using a laparoscope (a thin, lighted tube with a camera) to guide the surgeon's instruments. This method is less invasive and results in a quicker recovery time, but it may not be suitable for all hernias.
Specific Hernia Surgeries
The type of hernia surgery performed will depend on the location and severity of the hernia. Common hernia surgeries include:
Inguinal Hernia Repair
Inguinal hernias occur in the lower abdomen when tissue pokes through the muscle. Surgery is typically performed to prevent the complication of a strangulated hernia, which occurs when the blood supply to the protruding tissue is cut off.
Hiatal Hernia Repair
Hiatal hernias occur when part of the stomach protrudes through an opening in the diaphragm. Surgery is usually only recommended if the hernia is causing severe symptoms.
Umbilical Hernia Repair
Umbilical hernias occur when tissue pokes through the navel. They are most common in infants and usually disappear on their own. However, surgery may be necessary if the hernia is large or becomes incarcerated (stuck).
